A speeding driver who ploughed into a tree ran off and left one of his passengers to die. Andrew Blackburn, 27, had been driving a BMW at almost four times the speed limit in icy and snowy conditions before the smash in east Lancashire in December 2022.
Thomas Culshaw, 29, died as a result of severe head injuries he suffered in the sickening crash. Blackburn took over the driving after the vehicle had been pulled over by the police and the original driver detained.
He drove at speeds of 78mph in a 30mph zone on wet and icy roads, where heavy snow lay on the ground. At some points he drove on the wrong side of the road before colliding with a tree in Royds Avenue, Acccrington, three minutes later. Crash data recovered from the vehicle shows that five seconds prior to the initial impact the car was travelling at 76mph in a built up residential area with a 20mph speed limit.
