Arrests after King Charles portrait in Scots gallery vandalised by climate protestors

Two people have been arrested for allegedly vandalising a painting of King Charles at the Portrait Gallery of Scotland during an environmental protest.Members of This is Rigged - a campaign group opposing new fossil fuel projects in Scotland - spray painted over the portrait of the monarch on Wednesday afternoon.Activists were filmed using pastel pink paint to write "the people are mightier than the lord" before glueing themselves to the floor around 3pm.Sharing images of the incident on social media, This is Rigged said: "Two people with This is Rigged have sprayed the words 'the people are mightier than a lord', the slogan of the Highland Land League on a painting of King Charles III."The group added that they would not stop action until the Scottish Government vocally opposed all new oil and gas while securing a fair and fully funded transition for fossil fuel workers.They claim the Scottish Government is "doing nothing" to stand up to oil tycoons.The artwork targeted was King Charles III, born 1948, (as HRH The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay)’ by Victoria Crowe.The painting has been on display in the Edinburgh portrait gallery since it was commissioned by the National Galleries of Scotland in 2018.It comes after the group recently targeted Ineos refinery in Grangemouth twice and also allegedly scaled the Kelpies.A spokesperson at the National Galleries of Scotland said: "This afternoon there was a protest at National Galleries of Scotland: Portrait.
