Arlene Phillips believes it's “important” to see older women on television. The former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ judge - who was replaced by Alesha Dixon on the BBC latin and ballroom competition - advocates for not just young women to be “represented” to ensure that generations of women do not just “disappear”.
The 78-year-old television personality told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “We need to be represented on television. Otherwise older women will just disappear from prime time. ” She urged its vital that older women appear on programmes “that everyone sees on a regular basis with young people. ” Arlene loved seeing 80s television icon Joan Collins, 88, as a guest judge on the ITV celebrity singing show ‘The Masked Singer’.
She said: “She is the eternal glamour queen and it was so good to see her on the show” Arlene - who is currently tasked with choreographing the national tour of the stage musical ‘Grease’ - doesn’t want to think about aging.
She said: “I just want to get on with my life and see where it takes me. I am probably ridiculously young and stupid. Your brain doesn’t seem to grow with age. ” However, she does enjoy some of the benefits of getting older, such as “always” being offered a seat on the London Underground.
