Rebecca Rubin Senior Film and Media Reporter “Purpose,” a new show from “Appropriate” playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, will open on Broadway in the spring of 2025.
Phylicia Rashad will direct the play, which is set to begin previews on Feb. 25 ahead of opening night in mid-March. It will run at the Helen Hayes Theater for a limited engagement.
Billed as an “epic family drama,” the story follows the influential Jaspers, who have been a pillar of Black American politics — civil rights leaders, pastors and congressmen — for decades.
But there are cracks and secrets just under the surface. When the youngest son, Nazareth, returns home to Illinois with an uninvited friend, the family is forced into a reckoning with itself, its faith and the legacies of Black radicalism.
