Joshua Alston In Peacock’s true-crime drama “A Friend of the Family,” Bob Broberg (Colin Hanks) pleads with his wife Mary Ann (Anna Paquin) to help him understand her egregious lapse in judgment. “Don’t you have better sense? It doesn’t make any sense…why would you do such a thing?” Those also happen to be the questions bandied about on Twitter when “Abducted in Plain Sight,” a 2017 documentary about the Brobergs, went viral after landing on Netflix. According to what passes for consensus on social media, while the Brobergs endured a horrible ordeal, they bear most of the responsibility because of the unconscionable decisions they made. “A Friend of the Family” is written with an acute awareness of the backlash that met the Brobergs after they shared how they were manipulated and nearly destroyed by a malignant narcissist. It begins with a statement from the Brobergs daughter Jan, the primary victim in the story, who serves as a producer on “Family” along with Mary Ann. “I know it may seem unbelievable, but we lived in a different world back then,” Jan says. “I’m telling my family’s story today because so many people believe it could never happen to them.” As compelling and frightening as “Family” can be, it never quite makes the case that what happened to the Brobergs could happen to anyone. 

Joe Otterson TV Reporter Marc Velez has joined UCP as senior vice president and head of development, Variety has learned. In addition, Naketha Mattocks has joined Universal Television (UTV) as senior vice president of drama development. In his new role, Velez will report to Jennifer Gwartz, executive vice president of UCP. He joins the studio from Lee Daniels Entertainment, of which he was the president. He takes over development at UCP from Garrett Kemble, who left earlier this year for a role at Anonymous Content’s AC Studios. “Marc is a rare executive who is entrepreneurial, creative, and a partner to our talent and buyers,” said Beatrice Springborn, president of UCP and Universal International Studios. “We are fortunate to have him lead our creative team, who represent the best of the best as we continue to evolve and grow our slate.”

Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley in Italy. The  actor took to Instagram Wednesday to a slideshow of his time in the European country, which included a reunion with his  castmate.In the photos, Elgort and Woodley, 30, got cozy over dinner, sitting side by side as they enjoyed their meal.

Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort have shared the screen many times, from playing siblings in the action packed "Divergent" movies and costarring in the 2014 romantic drama "The Fault in Our Stars." The actors have teamed up again, but this time, to take on one of the most iconic dance scenes in movie history.  Woodley and Elgort reunited this week and they both took to Instagram to share some moments from their get together. Part of their time spent together was trying to reenact the Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey lift from the 1987 film, "Dirty Dancing."  Elgort shared a photo of the two's reenactment of the big lift on his Instagram with the caption "Clean dancing w Shai."
