A street in Manchester’s Northern Quarter will be traffic-free seven days a week to make social distancing easier in the city centre.

Thomas Street will be closed off except for loading vehicles between 6am and 10am, and 6pm to 7pm, from this Saturday. It is hoped the move will bring the area back to life as lockdown measures begin to ease, allowing more space for people to cycle through or queue outside shops.

A pedestrian and cycle zone was put in place on Thomas Street during weekends and Bank Holiday evenings last May on a trial basis.

Manchester council now intend to make the change a permanent one, and are urging residents, businesses and visitors to have their say on the plans.
