A Lazio fan has penned an open letter to Celtic fans defending the Roman club's supporters and insisting they are "not fascist."It came on the eve of the club's meeting in the Champions League at Parkhead and following controversy when they clashed in the Europa League four years ago.

On that occasion Neil Lennon’s side beat the Italian giants 2-1 but it was marred by the behaviour of visiting fans who marched through Glasgow while giving fascist salutes.

A section of the Green Brigade later unfurled a giant banner at Parkhead showing the body of Benito Mussolini being hung from a garage in Milan with the message 'follow your leader'.The Italian dictator's granddaughter Alessandra even became embroiled in a war or words with the Hoops legions and Celtic fans.

Mussolini was a reported fan of Lazio and players of the club have openly displayed fascist beliefs. Ex Hoops star Paolo Di Canio said in 2005 he was “a fascist, not a racist" after being caught up in a nazi salute storm.
