The American Music Awards might not happen this year after all. In a new report from Variety, it’s been rumored that because the Billboard Music Awards have announced a November date for their ceremony to take place, the AMAs could just be skipped altogether. Keep reading to find out more… According to multiple sources, the American Music Awards (AMAs) and the Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) are both struggling to secure a broadcast partner.
As a result, producer Dick Clark Productions, which is owned by Penske Media Corp (PMC), had to choose which show to throw its weight behind.
Since PMC owns Billboard, insiders speculate that the decision was made to promote its own brand. Other music industry professionals have also suggested that the AMAs are starting to become “stale”.
A spokeswoman for PMC has denied that the decision has been made about the AMAs taking a hiatus, asserting that discussions are ongoing for both awards shows. “We have offers on both shows from networks and streamers,” they shared. ABC, which has partnered with the AMAs for some time, was reportedly not aware of the BBMAs change until it was publicly announced on March 15.
