Joe Casey is speaking out about the lack of compensation that he has received from Marvel ahead of America Chavez’s big screen debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Joe has opened up about how while he’s excited to see the character introduced to new mediums, he’s also bummed he wasn’t compensated for his work. Click inside to read more… According to Joe, he has not received payment for America Chavez, outside of the page rates he got when working for Marvel as a writer, and also rejected what he describes as a “pittance” of an offer for her appearance in the franchise. “The fact is Marvel owns America Chavez.
That’s not in dispute on any level, but there are still systemic flaws in the way that creators are neither respected nor rewarded,” he shared.
Years ago, Joe explains, he did contact the publisher to request paperwork that would also cover her previous appearances in animated TV episodes and video games. Marvel publishing sent over a special character agreement for him to sign that included a cash offering, which is reported to be around the $5,000 range.
