TV viewers were given a golden opportunity to view some of the amazing places in Dumfriesshire in a recent episode of BBC Countryfile.Film crews were at Wanlockhead – the highest village in Scotland at 1531 feet (over 400m) above sea level – visiting the Lead Mining Museum and the restored Lochnell Mine, which was active for 150 years before ceasing operations in 1860.Presenter Sean Fletcher met with volunteer and trustee Jon Evans, to explore its history of lead, zinc, copper and gold mining and then tried his hand at gold panning in a local waterway with experienced gold panner Leon Kirk.Meanwhile, presenter Sammi Kinghorn, visited the The Crawick Multiverse near Sanquhar to explore the cosmic artland created by the late renowned land artist Charles Jencks, backed by landowner The Duke of Buccleuch, from a former open cast coal mine which shut down in the 1980s.She was shown around by Crawick’s operations manager Brian Johnston, and then took a trip to Moffat, which has the distinction of being Europe’s first Dark Skies Town and is the UK’s Eagle Town for its links with soaring repopulated Golden Eagle numbers and its popular September festival.Sammi took advantage of the dark skies to visit Moffat Community Observatory and was given a cosmic tour by chairman of the Moffat Astronomy Club, Jim Connechen.Meanwhile, Sean also turned his eyes to the skies to learn about the South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project with Dr Cat Barlow learning about satellite tagging and how schools are being taught about the birds of prey. Thanks to the project from six golden eagles a few years ago, there are now almost 50 flying in the skies above Moffat and the south of Scotland. And there was also a visit to the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve
