McCoist was the manager when Rangers began rebuilding from the bottom of the SPFL in 2011 and he watched on on Thursday night as Gio van Bronckhorst and his team blew Red Star Belgrade away to put one foot in the quarter-finals.
The Ibrox side are still competing in defence of their Premiership title while the Scottish Cup remains a live option too ahead of Sunday's trip to Dundee.
