Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Allison Russell has released the first taste of her next full-length project with “Superlover,” a plea for peace.
Joining her in a duet is Annie Lennox, and it’s a rare one, marking her first vocal appearance on a recorded song since her 2018 movie theme “Requiem for a Private War”; Lennox’s last full album was 11 years ago.
But the two singers’ bond was strong enough to get Lennox eagerly back into the studio. “When she asked if I’d be interested in recording with her I said ‘yes’ without hesitation,” Lennox said in a statement. “‘Superlover’ is one of the most soulful, compassionate songs you could ever hear, at a point when there’s too much dissonance, polarization, aggressivity and hatred being openly bandied around the globe.
It’s an appeal for kindness and empathy, as opposed to violence and cruelty… It is medicine for the times and balm for the soul.
