Boris Johnson has announced a raft of new lockdown measures for England as ministers battle to curb spiralling infection rates.

The Prime Minister told MPs the UK had reached a "perilous turning point" in the crisis and further action was needed. In a statement in the Commons, Mr Johnson said rising case numbers had convinced him that "this is the moment where we must act".

He stressed that this was not a return to the strict nationwide lockdown, but an attempt to ward off the need for stricter measures. "We are acting on the principle that a stitch in time saves nine," the Prime Minister said.

The PM also made clear that restrictions could be in place for up to six months unless significant progress is made in developing a coronavirus
