Alister Jack stays as Scottish Secretary despite departure of Boris Johnson loyalists

Rishi Sunak has kept Boris Johnson loyalist Alister Jack as Scottish Secretary - despite a raft of allies of the ex-Prime Minister leaving the Tory Government.

The new prime minister has been shuffling his pack after taking over from Liz Truss in Downing Street after she served just 49 days in office.Jack, the MP for Dumfries and Galloway, has been the Scottish Secretary since Boris Johnson appointed him in July 2019 to replace David Mundell.

He was with Johnson in his final hours in office in Downing Street and kept the job under Truss.However, despite other Johnson allies returning to the back benches, Jack will remain in post.SNP MSP Rona Mackay said: "If Alister Jack pitched up as the 11th man for your football team you'd choose to play with 10 men."Scotland's alleged man in the cabinet has been an empty jersey.

He has singularly failed to stand up for Scotland at any point during his time as Scots Secretary."His sole function seems to be doing or saying nothing that might jeopardise the thing he covets most - a seat in the unelected Lords."We know the Tories are in dire straits but that doesn't excuse giving Alister Jack money for nothing."
