Alex Rodriguez is opening up about a recent health diagnosis. On Wednesday (May 31), the 47-year-old retired Yankees player revealed during an appearance on CBS News that he was diagnosed with early-stage gum disease. Keep reading to find out more… After being complimented on his smile, Alex noted that “looks can be deceiving.” “I just recently went to see my dentist and not thinking anything about any gum disease,” Alex shared. “And the dentist tells me the news, and then I come to find out over 65 million Americans have this gum disease.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 46% of adults 30 or older show signs of gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss.

The diagnosis has inspired Alex to join forces with OraPharma to raise awareness about dental wellness. Alex also emphasized the importance of proactive dental hygiene for all Americans, adding that dental issues are more “prevalent in our Black and Brown communities, especially my Latino community.” Late last year, Alex reacted to ex-fiancee Jennifer Lopez‘s marriage to Ben Affleck.
