Sterling's season with Manchester City ended disappointingly, scoring just once in his final 16 appearances and suffering defeat in the Champions League final against Chelsea.
With the likes of Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho for competition in the forward areas of England's attack, many wanted Sterling to be dropped.
However, Southgate stuck by the City man and got his reward as he netted England's only goal of the game against Croatia to get the Euro 2020 campaign off to a winning start.
