Comedian Aisling Bea is back on our screens, starring in Channel 4's new romantic drama, Alice & Jack. The six-part series tells the story of two people who fall head over heels for one another after meeting on a blind date.
Aisling plays Lynn, Jack's wife and mother of his child. But what do we know about the star away from her TV success? The 39 year old, whose full name is Aisling Clíodhnadh O'Sullivan, recently shared the heartbreaking meaning behind her stage name.
Speaking on My Therapist Ghosted Me with Vogue Williams and Joanne McNally, the actress and screenwriter said that it was a tribute to her late father, Brían. "There was already a great Irish actress called Aisling O’Sullivan and so you can’t be called like, Judy Frank Dench, you have to get a new name because being an actor is like having your own business." She added: "I took Bea from the start of Brían Ó Súilleabháin." The star then joked that she was "carrying a bit of that trauma with me at all times, lest I forget." Aisling’s dad took his own life when she was just three years old.
However, it wasn’t until she was 10 that she learned how he had actually died. She spent the next few decades with many questions, including the tragic thought that her father had “forgotten” her after not referencing her in his suicide note. “His suicide felt like the opposite of parenting.
