Callum Fordyce says Airdrie must target a play-off slot before they can challenge for the League One title, having learned lessons from last season. The Diamonds assistant boss says the focus was so intently on beating Cove Rangers to the title last term that they took their eye off the ball in the play-offs, and ended up with nothing as Queen’s Park pipped them in the Championship play-off final.Fordyce and boss Rhys McCabe are taking it game by game, but beating Peterhead 3-0 on Saturday moved them back up to fourth, as they head to Kelty Hearts this weekend.“You can’t really look at the title unless you’re sitting at the top, in my opinion,” he said. “We learned that last season.“The main focus was on ‘we’re going to win the league’ and we didn’t do it, so you’ve got to make sure you get that play-off slot to start with.“There’s still a long way to go, there are so many teams that can do it, and we want to win the league, that’s the main objective – of course it is.

But first and foremost we have to keep winning.”Meanwhile, with Airdrie bringing in strikers Joe Dixon and Bright Prince and midfielder Ben Stanway during the transfer window, Fordyce hopes there is more to come.He added: “We’re going to be looking elsewhere in the window, as much as we can.”Talks are ongoing with St Mirren over winger Lewis Jamieson, who signed a loan deal for the season, but can be recalled by the Paisley club this month. He missed the trek to Peterhead with a groin injury.Follow Lanarkshire Live Sport onTwitter via@LanLiveSport, like us onFacebookor find us onInstagramfor the latest sports news, pictures and video.
