Airdrie celebrate historic Scottish Cup win centenary

Airdrie are preparing to mark the centenary of their Scottish Cup win this year, with several events planned.The New Broomfield club has also set up a dedicated Twitter page that will take fans through the Scottish Cup run in “painstaking detail” as they recall an historic triumph in the 46th season of the competition.On April 19, 1924, Airdrie beat Hibs 2-0 in a “one-sided final” at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, in front of a 59,218 crowd, with a double from Willie Russell, who scored in four and 37 minutes to take the trophy back to Lanarkshire.The Diamonds beat Greenock Morton 2-1 in the first round, ousted St Johnstone 4-0 and Motherwell 5-0 in rounds two and three, to set up a quarter-final against Ayr United.After a 1-1 draw, draws of 0-0 and 1-1 followed, before Airdrie eventually progressed with a 1-0 win in a third replay.Airdrie defeated Falkirk 2-1 in their semi-final, while Hibs eventually eliminated Aberdeen with a 1-0 replay win.Manager Willie Orr then led a team of Jock Ewart, Alex Dick, George McQueen, Tom Preston, Jock McDougall, Bob Bennie, James Reid, Willie Russell, Hughie Gallacher, Bob McPhail and Jimmy Somerville to victory.A statement from Airdrieonians reads: “Fans will be aware that the competition has a significant place in Diamonds history, and this year we celebrate a very special centenary.“One hundred years ago this week, Airdrieonians were preparing to enter the competition with a first-round tie against Greenock Morton.“The match would turn out to be the first step on the road to glory for an Airdrie side packed with talent, skill and determination.“A committee, including club directors, staff and historians, has been set up to co-ordinate proceedings to mark the 1924 triumph, and we’ll have
