As the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards rolled in on Monday, it was clear that this year’s Oscars would be a ray of hope for people of colour.
Infamous for having all-white nominees, the award show received backlash for consistently failing to diversify in the past. This year, Steven Yeun and Riz Ahmed made history by becoming the first Asians to receive an Oscar nomination in the ‘Best Actor’ category.
Adding on to the list of people who made history, actress Viola Davis got her 4th Oscar nomination for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom making her the most-nominated Black actress in the Academy Awards to date.The How to Get Away with Murder star has previously received Oscar nominations for Doubt, The Help, and Fences for which she was won.
