German singer Nena rose to fame in the 1980s with her self-titled band.The star, real name Gabriele Susanne Kerner, formed the group with fellow musicians Rolf Brendel, Jurgen Dehmel, Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen and Carlo Karges.
Nena released their first single, Nur geträumt, in 1982, which became an instant hit in Germany. The following year, the band released their first album, titled Nena.
It contained the singles 99 Luftballons and Leuchtturm, with 99 Luftballoons reaching No.1 in Germany and the Netherlands.This song proved to be the band's ticket to stardom, as it went on to enjoy major international chart success in 1984.
An English version of the song, 99 Red Balloons, reached No.1 in the UK charts while the German edition hit No.2 in the US. 99 Red Balloons became Nena's most successful song.The band continued to enjoy success and toured the world, but in 1987 they split and lead vocalist Nena revealed she was going solo.
