100-year-old Scots nicknames Shoogly Jock, Icky Boaby and Steamie leave people in stitches

An amateur historian has left people fascinated with a list of 100-year-old nicknames from a Scottish village. Jack McLachlan revealed that between 1900 and 1930, the area of Mearns, which became the East Renfrewshire village of Newton Mearns, was home to folk named Roarin Rab, Nanny Purple and Snadger Harvie.Other monikers were Piggy Logan, Toozy Jenny, Crocodile Skin McGee, Tack McGee, Shoogly Jock McLean, Flood Butler, Beetlenose Butler, The Wig and his brother, The Moose.Jack, of Fife, posted the list on his Old Weird Scotland Twitter account, which he started during the first coronavirus lockdown, and was swamped with positive responses from tickled Scots.

The 32-year-old wrote: "If you're writing a book set in rural Scotland and all your characters go by their given names, I hate to break it to ya, but you're doing your readers a disservice."Jack's research also found the area was home to someone called Carrot Donald, his nephew, Crack-o-Dawn, and others called Winks Smith, Gudgen Grady o Netherplace, Guttie Rae, Baldy Ross, Puck Downie, Bum Stewart, and Cuggs and Stripes McMeechan.Dr Cod McKinlay, Steak 'n' Kidney Murray, Willie "Boiler" Gill, Stainy Willie aka Auld History Stains, Bingy Close, Scud Crawford, Tory Malone (a Conservative voter) Snig Banny aka Big Sandy, Whisky Rankin and Snek Raeburn were also unearthed by Jack.His list of the bizarre names, which spanned four Tweets, also included Sody McMeekin, Browntails Porter, Bumble Forbes, Howdy Henny Grady, Blue Goose Shand, Sand Shoe Pete Sinclair, Ghandi Sinclair, Steamie Kirkwood and Birdy KirkwoodThe final Tweet also mentioned Icky Boaby McKelvie and his dad, Dykes McKelvie, Spinnle Johnson, Luggy Barr, Teapot Lid, Caruso Byrne (a good singer), Cadger
