100 year old says 'good luck and the odd brandy' are key to long life

A devoted family man who turned 100 last week has put his long and happy life down to good luck – and the odd brandy.Andrew Brown Allan was born in Lesmahagow on January 27, 1923 and went to school there before moving to Currie as a young teenager.He married Anne Barr in 1951 in St Nicolas Church on the Station Road in Broxburn.The happy couple still live in the same house together in the town.They went on to have two children; Kenneth – who died in July 2021 – and daughter Hazel, and now have four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Andrew served in the Second World War when sadly his brother David was killed at the age of 19.He has a sister Isobel who is now 97 years old.His main interest is his garden and his greenhouse and he has grown all his own vegetables, which the family have eaten over the years, and cultivated some amazing fruit trees and shrubs.

He also has an unique cacti and succulent collection.Daughter Hazel said: “They are totally amazing and try still to be as independent as ever they were.“He would say his long life is a lot of luck but lots of fresh air and all things in moderation – and the odd brandy!” Don't miss the latest news from the West Lothian Courier.
