Bambie Thug has dedicated a performance of The Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’ at Download Festival to the people of Palestine.The artist, who memorably represented Ireland at this year’s Eurovision, played the Apex Stage at the Donington festival yesterday (June 14) and took the time to highlight the cause that is close to their heart.After singing the track ‘Trash’ from inside a wheelie bin, Bambie said, “You know what else is trash? Governments that allow genocides to happen. Our voices are more important than ever.”They then played a cover of ‘Zombie’, a song about the innocent victims of political violence, before rounding off the song with a cry of “Free Palestine”.Bambie had previously shared a recorded version of the cover earlier this year, which you can listen to below.The musician spoke to NME in May about playing the main stage of Download Festival this weekend, calling it “mental”.“I can’t wait,” they told NME. “After Eurovision I was like, ‘I’m going to be so bored’.

Chvrches’ Iain Cook has shared a remix of The Cranberries’ 1993 track ‘Linger’.Cook deconstructed the song, which first appeared on The Cranberries debut, ‘Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?’, and then reassembled it to stay true to the vocal tone of the late Dolores O’Riordan.“When I got the stems, the first thing I did was listen to Dolores’ vocal tracks in isolation,” Cook explained in a press release.“Hearing those for the first time was magical; I was shocked by the intimacy and emotion in her performance. The first thing I did was to sit with the vocals on their own and rework the chords on piano.“I often find that this is a great starting point with remixes as it helps you to shake off some associations that you have with the song, and this is a song which I’ve known and loved for over 30 years.”The Chvrches musician said it was a daunting task to remix the seminal track, because “it’s such a classic song that I’ve known and loved since I first heard it”.A post shared by The Cranberries (@thecranberries)A post shared by The Cranberries (@thecranberries)Cranberries drummer Fergal Lawler offered encouragement, and said in a statement: “Iain did an outstanding job in remixing ‘Linger.’ He reimagined the song completely, creating a fresh and upbeat version of this classic.“Dolores’ original vocal is retained and sounds so beautiful and vulnerable at times.

Eurovision entry Bambie Thug has shared an eerie cover of The Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’ and spoken out in support of Palestine ahead of this weekend’s finale.The non-binary singer will be representing Ireland at the final of the song contest in Malmö, Sweden, and has become Ireland’s first finalist since 2018. They won their place in Saturday’s final (May 11) with a performance of ‘Doomsday Blue’ at Tuesday’s (May 7) semi-finals.They have been listed as in the top 10 favourites to win the competition this year, and told NME that they are hoping to “give the best performance I can and try to connect in those three minutes to those millions of viewers”.That being said, there has been pressure on contestants, including Thug and UK representative Olly Alexander, to boycott the event in solidarity with Palestine.
