I can’t be the only one who has achieved nothing during lockdown

Back in my previous life – the life where I could move around freely and moan endlessly about being so very busy – I had a fantasy about my diary suddenly emptying, and having lots more time. If I had more time, I told myself, I would learn a new language, teach myself to cook properly, and perhaps start an upholstery course. I would do yoga and read more books and generally just be more relaxed and happy and productive, if only I had more time.

I can’t be the only one who is enjoying the little things

I found a bottle of multipurpose antibacterial spray the other day. It was in the cupboard under the kitchen sink, hidden at the bottom of a box of random dishwasher tablets, J-cloths and Marigolds that I had been rummaging through in the hope of finding a pan scourer. When I saw it, I could barely believe it. I picked it up and I turned it again and again in my hands, as if to check it was actually real. When it dawned on me that it was, I leapt up and started to dance.

I can’t be the only one whose favourite holiday is Easter

These are dark and strange times, but this morning I opened my bedroom window and I felt a flutter of hope in my heart. I felt the light hit my eyelids and I noticed that all the trees on my street had blossomed; I saw that nature continued, even if it feels a little like everything else is on hold. I’m not going to lie: I had a moment over Harry and Meghan leaving. Like, a real moment, with tears and snot and running mascara. And it’s embarrassing, because I don’t even really know them that well. OK, I know them better than most, but only really then in a teeny, tiny professional way, a texting every now and then and ‘hey, how are the kids?’ way. I don’t cry when colleagues who become friends depart for new companies, or when they leave for foreign shores.

In a few months' time, I will turn 40. I was quite looking forward to this milestone, until a friend sent me an email with a link to a blog piece she had stumbled across entitled: ‘FORTY THINGS ALL WOMEN SHOULD DO BEFORE THEY TURN 40.’ Stupidly, I clicked on the link, at which point I found a list of things that it was going to be completely impossible to do by July - I don’t have time to climb a mountain, or learn a new language, and the notion that I will somehow have developed knitting and gardening skills by then is laughable.
