PlayStation has confirmed that the company will be skipping Gamescom 2022.Running August 24 to 28, Gamescom 2022 is a trade fair for video games held annually in Cologne, Germany. The 2022 event will be the first in-person convention since 2019 but Sony won’t be taking part.A spokesperson confirmed the news to German gaming site Gameswirtschaft, which explains that “Sony Interactive is traditionally one of the most important and largest Gamescom exhibitors”.At Gamescom 2019, PlayStation displayed Kojima‘s Death Stranding and Marvel’s Iron Man VR for PlayStation VR while third-party studios such as Activision Blizzard and Remedy used Sony’s presence to share news about titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Control.Sony isn’t the only company to rule out an appearance at Gamescom 2022, with Activision Blizzard , Take-Two Interactive and Wargaming all confirming they won’t be appearing.

Microsoft technically got the all-digital Gamescom 2021 started with its showcase yesterday (August 24), it all officially begins with the Opening Night Live show taking place this evening.The Opening Night Live showcase will begin at 6:30 PM BST (10:30 AM PT) tonight, August 25, with a 30-minute pre-show before the main two-hour show runs. Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook will all air the showcase.

Gamescom’s Indie Arena Booth will return as an all-digital MMORPG experience this year called Summercamp Of Doom which features over 120 playable demos.The experience, which launches August 25, will let players experience an MMORPG game with its own set of themed worlds, experience levels and quests. Attending players will be able to try over 120 different indie games in Summercamp Of Doom and interact with developers within the game world.Indie Booth Arena will also host several streams across the event, with indie publishers like Finji Games, Tiny Build, Ravenscourt and more offering exclusive reveals of upcoming video games.

Gamescom 2021 will now go ahead as a digital-only event.The organiser had previously planned for a ‘hybrid’ event that would take place online with physical experiences, which would have taken place in Cologne.In a press statement, the organisers explained their decision to cancel the hybrid elements for an all-digital Gamescom in August.“This decision was made after extensive discussions with partners and exhibitors,” the statement reads. “Thus, the organizers take into account the current situation, in which too many companies are unable to participate in physical events this year due to the still difficult development.

GamesCom will be returning in 2021 as a “hybrid” event, featuring both online and physical experiences.GamesCom’s August opening means organisers are cautiously optimistic about the ability of the event to offer in-person experiences.
