With all the pageantry on display for the release of the two “Rebel Moon” films (and their respective director’s cuts), there’s been a distinct lack of discussion around filmmaker Zack Snyder’s other Netflix franchise, “Army of the Dead.” Well, apparently, that’s for a good reason.  In a recent interview with The Wrap, it has been confirmed that the planned expansion of the “Army of the Dead” franchise, which would include new films and an animated series, have been quietly canceled over at Netflix.

Zack Snyder is no stranger to shared cinematic universes, as he was the original man behind the DCEU series of films. At least there, the idea of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman all existing in the same universe makes sense and is part of the greater DC Universe canon.

Army of the Dead will return with a sequel – but that  he paused on the idea due to his busy schedule.In 2021, Snyder signed on for a follow-up film with Netflix as part of their two-year-first-look deal – but it won’t begin filming until his latest project Rebel Moon is completed.Snyder is currently working on an epic sci-fi film Rebel Moon, which he said needs most of his attention because it’s not “a small-time commitment”. The movie is set to arrive on Netflix this December and will tell the story of a “peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy” making a stand against “the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius.”During an interview with The Nerd Queens, the director explained why there is a delay in the Army of the Dead 2.

“Army of Thieves” has major “him?!” energy, and that’s part of the charm, for a little while at least. Of all the bad-asses and gritty heroes introduced in Zack Snyder’s Netflix zombie epic “Army of the Dead,” played by the likes of Dave Bautista, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Ella Purnell, the last character you’d expect to get a prequel-spin-off was the harmless German safecracker Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer), him with his high-pitched squeals whenever zombies were near.

This has been a big year for Zack Snyder. Not only did he finally get to release his years-in-the-making “Synder Cut” of “Justice League,” but he also got to kickstart his “Army of the Dead” franchise on Netflix, not just with the first film but also the first spinoff, “Army of Thieves.” But this is only the tip of the ‘Dead’ iceberg, as the filmmaker is already teasing what should be coming in the first sequel, “Planet of the Dead.” For those that haven’t seen “Army of the Dead,” the film tells the story of a zombie outbreak that is seemingly kept under confinement in what is left of Las Vegas.

Netflix and Zack Snyder have seemingly developed a solid working relationship following the successful release “Army of The Dead.” The streamer has already touted the success metrics of the Snyder zombie movie (it’s apparently one of their biggest movies), Snyder’s already produced a prequel with “Army of Thieves” and an animated prequel project “Army of The Dead: Lost Vegas,” is expected to premiere spring 2022.

Even though Tig Notaro and Chris D’Elia are both stand-up comedians, the comparisons end right there. D’Elia’s brand of humor is completely different from Notaros, not to mention the completely opposite physical statures of both.
