Government scientists reportedly want to keep social distancing measures in place "for the foreseeable future" even as millions of Brits get their Covid vaccines.
But there are warnings that retaining the "one-metre plus" rule could hit already struggling businesses when they are allowed to re-open - such as pubs, cinemas and theatres.
The government is said to be gearing up for a "killer argument" in the coming days over the continuing use of social distancing.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggested that some rules could be here to stay when he told a Downing Street briefing on Monday that no vaccine programme is "100% effective".
