Coronation Street star Charlie Lawson slams soaps for being 'woke' and 'box-ticking'
Coronation Street star Charlie Lawson has slammed British soaps for 'ticking boxes'. The actor, who portrayed imprisoned Jim McDonald, appeared on GB News alongside former fellow Weatherfield resident Sherrie Hewson and Brookside's Tina Malone.Charlie, 62, was quizzed by broadcast Dan Wootton on "wokeness" and admitted current soaps don't "reflect reality".The actor argued that viewers would "start to switch off" from watching soaps as bosses choose to tick boxes. He admitted to feeling a sense of despair over the constant stream of "new things that you can and can't do".It came as Dan chatted to Charlie and fellow soap stars in the wake of June Brown's death.Charlie raised that many viewers are being extremely tight-lipped about what they want to watch and are afraid of calling soap bosses out.He told GMB's Dan: "We're great at being a silent majority in this b****y country over a great deal of things and I try not to be, to my detriment."There's always new things that you can and can't do and I despair and that goes across society in my humble opinion." He raged: "I hope to god that Corrie and EastEnders or whatever, Emmerdale Farm are around in 10 years but I think people start to switch off because boxes are being ticked with such heavy black ink and I mean that across the whole television industry."There is a silent majority out there who just want to say, excuse my French, they want to say, 'B******s to that, I want to watch what I want to watch'." During his stint on Coronation Street back in the late 90s, Charlie's character became temporarily wheelchair-bound following an altercation with son Steve in 1998.
