Two of Newcastle's worst transfer buys now playing for same third-tier American side

Newcastle, the days of being owned by Mike Ashley and handing lucrative long-term contracts to French flops such as Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan appear to be behind them for good.Toon fans will not need reminding of the dark period in the Premier League club’s history where Ligue 1 was their preferred choice of market for recruiting players on the cheap. On the one hand, it got them Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa and Moussa Sissoko, who all can point to successful periods spent with the Geordie outfit. But the list of expensive transfer failures — ranging from the capture of Florian Thauvin to the hugely disappointing Remy Cabella — are just as prominent as their successes under Alan Pardew and Rafa Benitez.Unfortunately for Marveaux and Obertan, the pair fit snugly in the latter category following their ineffectual respective stints on Tyneside. And 10 years on from their respective arrivals, they now ply their trade in the third tier of American soccer.Playing in the United States no longer carries the same embarrassment that it once did.

Ousmane Dembele's agent appears to leak PSG talks amid Barcelona contract stand-off
Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele has dropped the biggest hint yet about his client's future in the January transfer window after being spotted receiving a ‘call’ from a certain Paris Saint-Germain official while being filmed by Spanish media. The Barcelona winger is expected to seal a move away from Camp Nou before the transfer window closes on January 31 after failing to agree terms on a new contract. And in a bizarre twist, Dembele’s agent may have inadvertently — or purposely — showed the path of where the talented forward will be playing his football for the second half of the season. His representative, Moussa Sissoko, was spotted touching down in Spain by cameras broadcasting for Spanish football show El Chiringuito. And in the footage, the French agent clearly displays his phone screen while walking from the airport which shows he is receiving a call — from 'Leonardo PSG', referring to the club's sporting director.Of course, it could be a simple chat about the weather in Paris or simply two friends catching up.But giving the timing, and the fact Sissoko was coming back from a transfer meeting, it seems to be no coincidence that the transfer broker is discussing a possible move to the Parc des Princes for Dembele before the window shuts. The 25-year-old’s current deal expires in June and, while Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez has admitted he wants Dembele to stay, the player's refusal to renew his contract has forced the Spaniard’s hand.Reports in Spain suggest Xavi told Dembele to sign on the dotted line or leave the club this month, having reiterated he will not play for the club again without committing his future to the Blaugrana."If he does not accept one of these two options, he will not play for Barcelona
