Mike Mitchell, lead guitarist of the Kingsmen who sang the 1963 hit song Louie Louie, passes away

Musician Mike Mitchell passed away on Friday on what was his 77th birthday.The news was shared on Monday by a publicist for his garage rock band the Kingsmen for which Mitchell served as the lead guitarist for over 60 years.The band was best known for the hit 1963 recording of Richard Berry's song Louie Louie, which is the story of a sailor returning to Jamaica to see his lady love. The tune went on to be covered by the Beach Boys, the Grateful Dead and R.E.M.

Rolling Stone received confirmation of Mitchell’s death from Kingsmen drummer Dick Peterson, who said he “peacefully passed away.” No specific cause of death has been stated.“We are deeply saddened by Mike’s passing. He was the kindest and most generous man on the planet,” Peterson said in a statement.“For the past 57 years, we have been playing colleges, fairs, and festivals, vintage car shows and rock n’ roll shows throughout the USA.
