Liverpool 'prepare to smash transfer record' for Darwin Nunez pulling ahead of Man Utd
Liverpool have pulled ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Darwin Nunez amid reports Jurgen Klopp is prepared to break the club's transfer record to land him.Nunez has had tongues wagging all over Europe following a stellar season with Benfica during which he netted a whopping 34 goals in 41 matches and Liverpool are determined to bring the Uruguayan to Anfield. He won't come cheap though, especially with several top clubs sniffing around, and the Reds will likely have to spend upwards of £80million to nab him, which would eclipse the £75 million they spent on Virgil van Dijk back in 2018.Julian Ward, Liverpool's new Sporting Director, has reportedly been in discussions with Benfica and it's understood that Nunez is keen to move to Merseyside. The 22-year-old would have no trouble slotting straight into the side either with Sadio Mane on the verge of a switch to Bayern Munich.Liverpool got a first-hand look at Nunez during their Champions League quarter-final clash with Benfica in April, with the forward netting a goal in each leg, and Klopp spoke of his admiration for the player a week after progressing to the semis.
