The Wishaw area has higher numbers of positive cases than other areas of Lanarkshire and this has been replicated in the number of patients who have been admitted to University Hospital Wishaw.  Anumber of wards are currently closed to new admissions and transfers and strict control measures are in place to reduce the risk of infection.

The hospital has experienced interruptions with its electrical power because of a fault with an electrical transformer unit.  The hospital is currently being powered by back-up generators until normal power is restored.  The generators are able to power the whole hospital however a small number of diagnostic tests had to be rescheduled. Heather Knox, NHS Lanarkshire Chief Executive, said:  “In the interest of patient safety and as a precautionary measure, we have taken the decision to redirect ambulances to our two other acute hospitals.  “Also, some of our more specialist urgent procedures patients may be directed to facilities in neighbouring health boards.

NHS Lanarkshire is making plans to re-establish a small number of elective operations.
