The First Minister has insisted his controversial hate crime law will not be axed like the failed legislation targeting football fans. Humza Yousaf said the law is “definitely” here to stay on the eve of it coming into force and claimed criticism was a Holyrood "bubble story". But he faced further criticism after former police union boss Calum Steele said the law risked turning officers into “societal prefects”. The hate crime law, passed by MSPs in 2021, creates a new offence of stirring up hatred based on protected characteristics like sexuality, disability and religion.
