Inside Premier League referees' assessment meetings after weekend of calamities
Premier League was called into serious question over the weekend following a series of highly-questionable decisions.Fans counted at least six major incidents, all of which involved VAR, that officials got badly wrong - including contentious penalty calls, soft disallowed goals and horror tackles going unpunished.Calls for greater scrutiny of referees have intensified, but as Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher found out a few years ago during a visit to St George's Park, Premier League officials are always held to account when they make mistakes.The two Sky Sports pundits sat down with referee Anthony Taylor and PGMOL Select Group Director Adam Gale-Watts in 2017 to discuss how officials are assessed and what happens after they make an error during a match."Refereeing technical experts look at every judgement that goes on in a particular game," director Gale-Watts explained."Every particular decision will be looked at, and then coded as either being a correct decision or an incorrect decision, and then rated in terms of its difficulty."They were told that referees then receive these results before being given the opportunity to comment on and evaluate their own performance.Taylor, who has officiated in the Premier League for over a decade now, insisted that officials always take the opportunity to assess how they could have done things differently after a mistake is made during a match.Should referees be expected to explain controversial decisions on camera after the game?
