Traditionally, the USC Scripter Awards take place on USC’s campus with an elegant dinner and tributes to each of the 10 nominees in the film and TV categories. This year, was markedly different with a pre-taped ceremony.

As the Oscars draw closer, more and more category winners seem to be locking into place. One of those categories that took another step to being pretty much over is Adapted Screenplay.

One of the more revealing moments of the 2023 Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon was the very warm standing ovation Sarah Polley and the cast of “Women Talking” received. The film was honored with the Robert Altman Award which is given to the director, cast and its casting director (in this case Polley’s brother John Buchan along with Jason Knight).

In an online ceremony, the USC libraries announced the winners of their 2022 USC Scripter Awards, an honor that rewards not only the screenwriter, but the author of the original adapted work. On the film side, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Elena Ferrante won for “The Lost Daughter.” The television award went to Danny Strong and Beth Macy for “Dopesick,” based on the latter’s nonfiction book “Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America.” READ MORE: Oscars 2022: “The Power of the Dog” leads with 12 nominations [Full List] The Scripter Award winners are selected by a group of industry professionals and have rarely lined up with their equivalent Oscar or Emmy categories.

The USC Libraries announced the nominees for the 34th USC Scripter Awards this morning and it was perhaps the most genre-based group of honorees ever. “Dune,” “Station Eleven” and “WandaVision” earned nominations in both the film and television categories.

Some award season honors are bellwethers for Oscar acting nominations. Others provide hints of where the Academy’s Documentary and Animation branches may be leaning toward with their own individual categories.
