An integral part of the most recent “The Lord of the Rings” and “Planet of the Apes” cinematic franchises, the celebrated British actor and filmmaker knows how hard it is to balance real-world themes in fantastical worlds.

Critically acclaimed and Emmy-nominated, while it may not have matched the ratings of similar “Star Wars” shows like “The Mandalorian”—perhaps more adult and mature than expected— the “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” prequel spinoff series “Andor” was very adored by its fans. Already highly anticipated, the second season will be something special, according to the show’s creator/showrunner Tony Gilroy, who added to the hype.

Despite our best predictions with our 2024 TV preview, perhaps a little on the early side, when Disney finally revealed its 2024 Disney+ slate, in spite of four Lucasfilm projects on the docket for this year, Tony Gilroy’s “Andor” starring Diego Luna wasn’t one of them. Instead, Disney promised Leslye Headland’s “The Acolyte,” seemingly scheduled for June of this year, Jon Watts’ “Skeleton Crew,” plus “The Bad Batch,” which just finished up season three, and “Tales Of The Jedi” season two.

As many dialed-in fans on social media know, season two of “Andor” has finished shooting. Both Diego Luna and Adria Arjona, stars of the Lucasfilm series, recently posted on Instagram, saying goodbye to their respective roles and confirming that production on the second season of the “Star Wars” spin-off prequel had finished.

Disney has confirmed that Andor season two has been delayed, and will not be released on Disney+ in 2024.The first season of the Star Wars spin-off television show was a success, serving as a prologue to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.Intense and dark in nature, it received critical acclaim and a large viewership, with fans keen for a sequel.In a five-star review of the first season, NME wrote: “It’s not just an extension of the films, but something genuinely different that pushes the edges of the galaxy far, far away from its origins.”However, reportedly due to strike action earlier this year, production on season two was halted with only two weeks left of filming.But it doesn’t appear that returning to the project was a priority, as the 2024 release schedule unveiled by Disney on Tuesday, doesn’t include the second season of Andor, and it will likely be released some time in 2025.This follows a confirmation earlier this year at the Star Wars Celebration fan convention that the second series would shoot throughout August 2023, with a view to launch the series on Disney+ in August 2024.However, when development on the series was brought to a halt during the WGA writer’s strike and the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike in the summer, the release projection was reportedly postponed.The release schedule does contain several upcoming Star Wars projects, including The Acolyte and Tales Of The Jedi season two.In other news, actor Charlie Hunnam recently revealed that he almost played Anakin Skywalker in the franchise.

Are you ready for even more guild awards? This afternoon, after SAG and DGA had their say, the Writers Guild of America announced their 2023 nominations in television and non-film categories. And, unlike their peers, the WGA recognized some well-deserving programs that have gotten little awards love so far such as “Andor,” “Bad Sisters,” “Fleishman Is In Trouble” and “Julia.” Overall, “Better Call Saul” led all programs with three nominations.

The big movie theater comeback we all expected may have been slightly delayed by a year (we see you 2023), but the past 12 months saw “some” great cinema find its way to the masses. And while the selections at Telluride, Sundance, and TIFF were disappointing overall, Cannes thankfully delivered the goods.

It would be fun to be a fly on the wall at Lucasfilm as they discuss the performance of “Andor” Season 1. Without a doubt, the “Star Wars” series is the most critically acclaimed show Lucasfilm has released on Disney+.
