Manchester United had taken too long to get going in their FA Cup quarter-final victory against Norwich City, but defended the decision to make eight changes from the side that won in midweek.
Six of those players coming in were making their first start since March and United showed signs of rust in a poor performance at Carrow Road.
Odion Ighalo had fired them into the lead early in the second half only for Todd Cantwell to equalise and Norwich threatened an unlikely winner before Timm Klose was sent off late on and Harry Maguire struck three minutes from the end of extra-time.
