Former Tottenham Hotspur captain and double winner Tony Marchi has died at the age of 89, with tributes pouring in.Marchi had two spells with the club after first joining Spurs as a junior, making a total of 232 appearances for the club he would also captain.The former midfielder was part of Spurs' league title-winning side in 1961 and was key as the club lifted the European Cup Winners' Cup two years later in 1963.He also spent two years of his playing career in Italy, with spells at both Vicenza and Torino following his first stint at Tottenham, during which he wore the armband between 1956 and 1957.Spurs confirmed Marchi's death in a club statement, which read: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Tony Marchi."A former captain of the Club in the 1950s and part of our 1961 Football League and 1963 European Cup Winners’ Cup-winning squads, Tony passed away at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford on Tuesday evening (15 March). He was 89."After two seasons in Italy, Marchi would return to north London in 1959, playing on for another six years before moving into management at the age of 32.During his time at Spurs, Marchi played alongside club legends Danny Blanchflower and Dave Mackay, as Spurs won the double during the 1960-61 season.Spurs have confirmed they will hold a tribute to Marchi will take place at this Sunday's match against West Ham United.
