AC Milan from Cork City on a fairytale permanent transfer that comes after a successful loan spell with the Serie A giants that begun back in February. Milan have exercised their option to make the deal permanent after being impressed by the Republic of Ireland youth international who made his senior debut for Cork only last year, having featured in their under 18 side. The 17-year-old central defender made his first appearance for Milan's Primavera 1 side back in March, and comes from a famous family that includes Olympian parents Rob and Marian, as well as forming a close friendship with former Premier League midfielder Stephen Ireland."Cathal has clearly done well while on loan and is now getting the opportunity to sign permanently," said Liam Kearney, Cork City's head of academy."That he is getting this opportunity is a testament to his own hard work and dedication, as well as the work put in by his coaches at Ringmahon Rangers and here at our academy."Heffernan spoke out regarding his initial loan deal back in February, admitting that it didn't quite feel like a reality.
