Thania Garcia In spring 2020, the U.S. came to terms with its role in racial inequality on the heels of a tragedy: the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. That singular moment compelled many, including those in the music business, to pledge funds and action. It also gave birth to the Black Music Action Coalition, a collective of Black creators, activists and change-makers who have diligently kept the issue in the headlines and on the minds of corporate parents.  On Sept. 22, the organization — whose leadership includes industry veterans Damien Smith, Caron Veazey and Shawn Holiday, among others — celebrates its second annual Music in Action gala in Beverly Hills, where honorees include Lil Baby, Sony Music Publishing chairman Jon Platt, 300 Elektra Entertainment’s Kevin Liles and 1619 Project creator Nikole Hannah-Jones. It promises to be a gathering of heavies, as last year’s inaugural fete — Variety is a media sponsor — drew the Weeknd, Motown chairwoman Ethiopia Habtemariam and attorney Ben Crump. 

Thania Garcia Grammy-winning R&B artist Daniel Caesar led the late-night Coachella sets on Friday night by bringing out Justin Bieber for an understated performance of their No. 1 hit, “Peaches.”Caesar invited Bieber onto a stage flooded in red light, saying, “give it up for my boy, Justin Bieber.” Caesar marveled at the surprise appearance himself, telling the crowd, “Fuckin’ Justin Bieber, man, it’s crazy, right?”The throngs of festival-attendees joined in cheering for the groovy song, which also features Giveon.Caesar’s performance included several songs from his 2017 album, “Freudian,” including “Get You,” “Best Part” and “Blessed.” His 2018 single, “Who Hurt You?,” was also represented, along with a new track called “Please Do Not Lean.” Caesar — who recently signed with Republic Records, as reported by Billboard — is managed by Jeffrey Azoff, Shawn Holiday and Cara Moser of Full Stop Management.Prior to joining Republic, the singer was signed with indie label Golden Child Recordings, which he co-founded in Toronto.

William Earl The Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) has announced a partnership with Wasserman Music and the commercial music program at Tennessee State University for a music accelerator program set to run May 9 to 26.In collaboration with Nashville Music Equality and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the intensive curriculum will cover multiple sectors of the industry including songwriting, copyrights, publishing, labels, marketing, touring and publicity, among other focuses, and include guest lectures from influential executives. Among them: Post Malone manager Dre London, Artistry Group founder/CEO Max Gousse, Roddy Ricch manager Shawn Holiday, EMPIRE product manager Russell Barrett, Revels Group manager Jamil Davis and Wasserman Music agents Lee Anderson, Lenore Kinder, Callender, Chappel McCollister and Mallory Smith.

Roddy Ricch has announced that he will donate his compensation for playing Travis Scott‘s Astroworld to the victims of the festival’s tragic crowd crush.Ricch played a 30-minute set at the festival on Friday night (November 5), shortly before eight people died – and hundreds more were reportedly injured – in a “mass-casualty” stampede during Scott’s headlining set.In a post on his Instagram story, Ricch – real name Rodrick Moore, Jr.
