Remember recently, when we talked about how the “Star Wars” film franchise (putting aside the TV world, for now) is in a bit of a confusing flux? There’s a release date scheduled in 2025, but what film would occupy that space? Could it be the upcoming project from Taika Waititi? Maybe the just-announced film from writer Damon Lindelof and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Back in 2019, it was announced by the folks in charge at Disney that the “Star Wars” franchise would take a break on the film side of things after the release of ‘Rise of Skywalker.’ But even then, you have to assume the executives didn’t imagine we’d be waiting at least until 2025 for a new film in the galaxy far, far away. Big return? Will Smith appears to be plotting his acting return just six months after infamously slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage at the 94th Academy Awards; Smith seen in MarchGoldsman is behind a number of Smith-starring features, such as I, Robot (2004), I Am Legend (2007) and Hancock (2008). Despite it being a potential career comeback, a source told Deadline that Smith 'hasn’t committed' to starring in the film as of yet.

Pic has been a passion project for Will Smith and Akiva Goldsman who did I, Robot, I Am Legend and Hancock together. The hope remains that the film is a star vehicle for Smith though sources said he hasn’t committed to star. Goldsman wrote the script.
