A row has broken out over the amount to be paid to senior West Lothian councillors, after a bid by the SNP to delay a decision on salaries for further scrutiny was defeated.

Councillor Fitzpatrick  asked if there were still rules in place from a time when local government was “only open to rich people to hold local office.” Governance Manager, James Millar, explained that the current rules date from the introduction of multi-member wards, but any member could opt not to take remuneration, for instance on being elected as an MP or MSP.
