Black Canary is still happening.

Birds Of Prey actor Jurnee Smollett is getting her own spin-off from the film.The news first emerged via the Hollywood Reporter who reported that Smollett’s Birds Of Prey character, Black Canary – aka Dinah Lance – is getting her own spin off project and that it is already in early development with HBO Max.The new DC film will reunite Smollett with Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green who will write the script. Birds Of Prey producer Sur Kroll will also serve as a producer on this project.Green later confirmed the news on Twitter herself in a post that said: “We’re just at the very beginning of a loooong journey to the screen, but obvs I couldn’t turn down the chance to put the DAMN in The Black Damn Canary with @jurneesmollett!

Angelique Jackson “Lovecraft Country” and “Underground” creator Misha Green and Jurnee Smollett are teaming up for a third project, taking Smollett’s “Birds of Prey” character Black Canary on a new adventure in her own standalone film. The project is in development for HBO Max.Smollett confirmed the news on Twitter, writing: “Guess the Canary is out of the cage! So excited to finally embark on this adventure with my creative soul sis.”Last year, Green and Smollett teased their interest in teaming up for a Black Canary project, telling Variety that they used to compete in the DCEU fighting video game “Injustice 2,” with Green choosing to play as Black Canary (the alter ego of songstress Dinah Lance).

Jurnee Smollett is ready to step back into Dinah Lance's shoes. The actress opened up about fans calling for a Black Canary spinoff while speaking with ET's Katie Krause at the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday. «I think it's just so amazing!» Smollett said with a smile.

Rachel Skarsten officially entered the world of capes and cowls with 2002’s TV series, “Birds of Prey”. At 16 years old, Skarsten soared as meta-human Dinah Lance, a young superhero-in-training. After a break from the business, the Canadian actress subsequently nabbed roles on various shows and movies, including “Lost Girl”, “Reign”, “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “Molly’s Game”. These days, she’s terrorizing Gotham City on “Batwoman” as the resident big bad, Alice. Skarsten calls the gig, “an incredible homecoming.”
