A Greater Manchester council is planning to stop drivers from using a town centre road at the weekend in a bid to create more space for social distancing.Wigan town hall is proposing a temporary closure of Market Street in Atherton to allow businesses to set up outdoor seating areas and give more space for pedestrians.The road would only be shut on weekends, but it is hoped that closure will come into effect from Saturday, July 11, and last through the summer months.The proposals will prevent traffic using Market Street on Saturdays, 10.30am to 11pm and on Sundays 10.30am to 7pm.Due to the impact on bus services, two temporary bus stops on Mealhouse Lane would also be put in place at the weekend.Coun David Molyneux, leader of Wigan council,

A long-awaited £20 million link road connecting Wigan town centre with the M6 motorway has been completed.The new A49 route intends to alleviate congestion and air pollution south of the town by bypassing the busy Poolstock road and bridging over the Leeds-Liverpool canal.More than two kilometres of new dual carriageways have been laid to connect Warrington Road and Goose Green to Westwood Park.The existing Westwood Park internal access road has been widened along with the road bridge’s junction with Poolstock and Chapel Lane.It will eventually meet up with an improved link M58 link road from Junction 26 of the M6 to the west, though the £23m road is some way off completion.Coun David Molyneux, leader of Wigan council, hailed the opening of

Wigan and Leigh will reopen to shoppers from next week.Traders at both market halls will be able to return from Monday, June 15 as part of a phased reopening.It is hoped all stallholders will eventually return by July 4.The announcement comes a week after Wigan’s outdoor market reopened to the public.As traders prepare to reopen, a host of measures are being put in place to maintain social distancing, including floor markers, hand sanitising facilities and extra security and staff to ensure customer flow.Coun David Molyneux, the leader of Wigan Council, said: “Reopening our market halls is a positive step forward in the recovery of our local economy amid the coronavirus pandemic and we have been in contact with our traders over recent weeks
