Everton fans thank protester as Alex Iwobi nets Newcastle winner in 99th-minute
Everton fans are queuing up to thank the protester who handcuffed himself to the post during their 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Thursday, as the delay he caused meant enough time was added on for them to grab a late winner.Alex Iwobi netted the all-important goal for the Toffees in the ninth minute of a whopping 14 added on at Goodison Park, to ease some of the intense pressure on the shoulders of Frank Lampard and his squad. The home side looked down and out after losing Allan to a controversial red card late in the second half, but rallied to finally end their run of consecutive defeats which has left them teetering on the edge of the relegation zone. But rather than lavish their winning goalscorer with praise, a number of Everton supporters seemed far more interested in thanking the gutsy protester instead."Did Everton hire that protester tonight? What a difference maker," one fan tweeted."That must be a first! Everton score the winner in 'time added on to allow protestor to be uncoupled from zip tie to the post'," said another.A third Everton fan even responded to a tweet the club put out after the game asking fans to name their man of the match, saying: "the protester".Who do you think won the game for Everton - Alex Iwobi or the protester? Furious Chelsea fan once punched player poster live on TV in Deadline Day outburst
Arsenal fans anxiously waiting outside the Emirates for Mesut Ozil’s last minute transfer to be confirmed in 2014 to Harry Redknapp’s hilarious interviews from his car window, it always seems to offer something new.And while Deadline Day can be best summed up as a hopeful if not chaotic end to a January or summer window, it has also provided its fair share of heartbreak and frustration. The latter was certainly the case with one particular Chelsea fan back in the summer of 2019.Arsenal were at the forefront of activity on Deadline Day as they collected a hefty £35million from Everton for Alex Iwobi, before turning their attention to Chelsea defender David Luiz.Luiz ended up being signed at the same time as Kieran Tierney, though his move from Chelsea to London rivals Arsenal was seen as controversial by sections of the Blues support. With a deal yet to be officially announced, one fan was spotted during Sky Sports’ Deadline Day coverage showing exactly what he thought of the transfer. But rather than dishing out a few unkind words at Luiz himself, the Blues fan was caught sizing up and punching a poster of the Brazilian central defender outside Stamford Bridge several times.Luiz later addressed his move to rivals Arsenal by revealing an “honest conversation” he had with manager at the time Frank Lampard. He said: “I always liked Chelsea, no doubt.“I saw a possibility of writing a new story in a new place, but I am grateful to Chelsea, to all people, to friendships that are for life.“It was an individual decision made through honest conversation – between me and Frank Lampard, no one else.Do you think the Luiz poster punch is the funniest Deadline Day moment ever? Alex Iwobi gets AFCON red card just five minutes after coming off bench for Nigeria
Everton's Alex Iwobi topped off a disappointing evening for Nigeria when he was given his marching order five minutes after coming on.The Super Eagles were dumped out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday evening by Tunisia. And after going a goal down, Nigeria's gaffer, Augustine Eguavoen, gambled on sending the Everton frontman onto the pitch to try and keep Nigeria's AFCON hopes alive. It was a bold call from Eguavoen as he hooked Leicester City's Kelechi Iheanacho for the former Arsenal man.But five minutes after his introduction to the pitch, Iwobi was given his marching orders.Iwobi had initially received the ball, but a poor first touch saw him overstretch to regain control. However, when stretching to hook the ball back, Iwobi had raked his studs down the inside of his markers leg, who immediately hit the deck. The Everton man was flashed a yellow card, but a VAR review saw the referee head over to the pitch side monitor to reconsider his decision. And after viewing the challenge in slow motion, Iwobi's yellow card was rescinded and he was given a red. Was the red card harsh on Iwobi? Let us know in the comments section "Think the slow-mo has done for him there - real time it’s a just a coming together as he’s trying to protect the ball," one fan tweeted.Another fumed: "Shouldn’t even be on the pitch in the first place! Better players in Nigeria who should be getting a chance! Joke decision by Eguavoen.""They’re taking the p***, I could understand a yellow but wtf kinda call is that," a third added. And a fourth tweeted: "Didn’t think it could get worse than the Prem…"
