Microplastics are being released from lunch boxes, kettles and baby feeding bottles, new research shows. Scientists analysed the particles given off commonly used polypropylene plastic products after being in contact with boiling water.
Polypropylene is one of the most commonly produced plastics in the world for food preparation and storage. Despite its widespread use its capacity to release microplastics was not appreciated until now.
The international team led by Trinity College Dublin focused on amounts released when sterilising infant bottles for formula milk.
