Australian pop star Sia has come under fire for her depiction of people with autism in her new movie Music. While her directorial debut has been hailed a success in some quarters, picking up two Golden Globe nominations, it has been criticised for casting a neurotypical actor as a nonverbal autistic girl and for depicting the use of restraints on people with ASD.
The movie has already bagged Golden Globe nominations for best picture in the musical or comedy category, along with Kate Hudson, who got a nod for best actress.
But the casting of dancer Maddie Ziegler in an autistic role, as well as for restraint scenes has not gone down well in some quarters according to Variety.
