It hopefully should not be controversial to say that “Mad Max: Fury Road” is a titanic work of modern filmmaking. It may then come as a surprise that its equally iconic creator, George Miller, has not made a film since its release.

It’s been seven years since Australian filmmaker George Miller dropped “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the acclaimed action fantasy some consider the best movie of the century. Now, the visionary writer/director/producer is back in the spotlight with another idiosyncratic original story.

Aussie director George Miller is at the Cannes Film Festival to premiere his romantic fantasy film “Three Thousand Years of Longing” which is led by British actors Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. Miller was specifically asked about his “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel “Furiosa” where he gave a little bit of insight into the post-apocalypse action film.

According to Variety, the epic fantasy romance picture budgeted at $60 million will be making its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

It’s been well documented that the development and production of George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” were nearly disastrous, leading to multiple headaches and hiccups delaying the film’s start, along with ditching a proposed 4th film with Mel Gibson and instead, starting a new story with Tom Hardy mid-stream after the events of “The Road Warrior.” When cameras finally began rolling, the problems didn’t end there as Hardy, and Oscar-winner Charlize Theron ended up despising each other, which may have helped illustrate the characters’ tension in the film’s story.

It’s hard to imagine now, so long after it was released, that anyone would have been able to step into the roles of Max and Furiosa in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” like Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron were able to do. However, like almost every other film ever created, there was a time when the filmmakers were trying to narrow down who exactly would be the best actors for the job.

Following his celebrated turns in “Watchmen,” “Candyman,” and “The Trial of the Chicago, “Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is arguably one of the most in-demand actors of the moment. Next month, he turns up “The Matrix Resurrections” as the new Morpheus; after that, it’s starring next to Jake Gyllenhaal in Michael Bay’s “Ambulance,” and he’s currently shooting “Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom.” But one highly anticipated film he won’t be appearing in now is the new “Mad Max: Furiosa” film.

Australia is undergoing something they somewhat avoided last year, the pandemic hurting the entertainment industry in a major way compared to other nations. The country was mostly able to get a handle on COVID-19 cases finishing movie shoots such as “Shang-Chi & The Legend of The Ten Rings,” “Mortal Kombat,” and more recently with Marvel‘s “Thor: Love & Thunder.” However, in the wake of the rise in cases there, productions that had been aiming to begin soon in New South Wales are either being delayed like George Miller‘s “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel “Furiosa” (was going to shoot over the summer) or moving to other countries like Chris Hemsworth‘s “Extraction 2” heading to Prague, Czech Republic.

It’s been nearly six years since “Mad Max: Fury Road” actually hit theaters. That film, though acclaimed and Oscar-winning since its release, was the subject of extensive delays and false starts during its development.

For years, when talking about the process of creating “Mad Max: Fury Road,” director George Miller would often talk about how the scripting stage was actually devoid of, well, writing. In fact, the common anecdote surrounding the production of ‘Fury Road’ is that Miller and the rest of his collaborators worked without a script and, instead, utilized thousands of storyboard drawings to shape the plot and action of the epic, Oscar-winning film.

It’s official—Anya Taylor–Joy is your new Furiosa. Earlier this week, it was announced that the actress best known for roles in “The Witch,” “Split,” and “Thoroughbreds” is taking over the role once occupied by Charlize Theron for a new “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel focused on the breakout badass character.

Filmmaker George Miller recently confirmed that he is all set to add another film to the Mad Max universe and it will be based on Charlize Theron’s character Imperator Furiosa from 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. However, the filmmaker stated that the film will not feature Theron in the role. During an interaction with The New York Times, the director opened up about the project and explained that it will be an origin story.

Charlize Theron has become one of the go-to actresses when it comes to action films. She’s appeared in films such as “Fate of the Furious,” “Atomic Blonde,” and the upcoming “The Old Guard,” due to her ability to not only act but to actually pull off action scenes.
