1995 comedy “Mallrats.”The 54-year-old director revealed that he spoke to one of the film’s stars, Shannen Doherty, about the potential sequel before she died of cancer in July at age 53.“When we lost Shannen, which was a tough loss, man,” Smith told The Post while promoting his new coming-of-age film, “The 4:30 Movie.”“They’re all tough losses, but she was such a wonderful person,” he added about the “Beverly Hills, 90210” alum. “I figured at that point, ‘Well, that’s it for Mallrats.’ Especially because, like, one of the last conversations I had with her was about ‘Mallrats,’ about us going to Universal and making it happen.”Smith noted that Doherty once told him on her “Let’s Be Clear” podcast that she’d “play the cancer card” to get the movie made.“So it’s very bittersweet.
